NPPD owns and manages the Sutherland Reservoir, part of its hydropower system. Nebraska Game and Parks Commission (NGPC) oversees most of the recreation areas at the lake. Primitive campsites are located on the east and west sides of the lake, while a private camping area with electrical hook-ups and a nine-hole golf course are located along the north shore. Four boat launching ramps and two swimming areas are available.

North Platte is home to Buffalo Bill State Historical Park. Modern lodging and dining are available in North Platte, as well. The Oregon Trail Golf Course is located just north of the lake. Sutherland also has dining, permit vendors and convenience stores.
Sutherland Reservoir offers great fishing for channel catfish, freshwater drum, walleye, smallmouth bass, wipers and yellow perch. A handicap-accessible pier is available, and a fish cleaning station is located at the inlet.
